The Local Area

The Lake District offers a wealth of opportunities for days out and things to do on holiday.  Troutbeck Cottage, located close to the A591 between Windermere and Ambleside is ideally placed to explore this magnificent part of the country.  Our cottage has plenty of information and leaflets about attractions throughout the Lake District and beyond.

The walking opportunities are without parallel in England - from gentle strolls to full day fell walks.  Our cottage has a selection of maps and walking guides for all abilities.  From the cottage door you can enjoy a good day's walk to the Kentmere valley, or to Wansfell above Ambleside.

In Troutbeck Bridge, the local pub is the Sun Inn, which is almost next door to our cottage.  The Sun Inn has been welcoming guests since the 18th century.  Also in Troutbeck Bridge, the public swimming pool is only 5 minutes walk away.

The villages of Windermere and Ambleside are only a few minutes drive away.  They offer plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs.  Windermere Cruises sail every day from Bowness Bay and Waterhead, and in the summer the boats also stop at Brockhole, just next door to Troutbeck Bridge.

The Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole is about 1 mile away and has lots of interest for kids (of all ages!) - there are 30 acres of gardens and grounds to explore, probably the best adventure playground in the Lake District, interactive exhibitions, special events....and more.

The Lake District has many literary connections.  The village of Grasmere is less than 20 minutes drive away, and is famous for its association with the Lakeland poets - most notably William Wordsworth who is buried at Grasmere Church.  His residences at Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount are both open to the public.

Only slightly further afield, Keswick, the Langdale Valley, Ullswater and Conniston are all easily accessible, being within an hours drive.
